Eurelectric and EY’s report, Unlocking EV Flexibility, highlights the strengths of V2G and smart charging for Europe
Electric vehicle (EV) owners in Europe could save between €450 and €2,900 per year. All through smart and bidirectional charging. A new study by Eurelectric and EY shows how EV batteries can do more than just power cars. By standardising the technology to store and sell electricity, EVs will help balance the grid and reduce energy costs.
Vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology goes one step further than smart charging. It enables EVs to send stored energy back to the grid when demand is high. This helps stabilise the system and integrate more renewable energy. But right now, many consumers lack the right incentives to participate.

The need for flexibility is growing fast.
As Europe adds more renewables and electrifies homes and businesses, flexibility demand will double in five years. By 2030, EV batteries could provide 114 TWh of storage—enough to power 30 million homes and meet 4% of Europe’s annual electricity demand.
Yet, challenges remain. EV adoption is still limited by high upfront costs. Although sales dipped in 2024, they are expected to rise in 2025. Charging infrastructure is another hurdle. Public chargers increased by 30% last year, reaching 820,000. But to hit the EU’s 2030 target, Europe must install 8,600 chargers every week.

Consumers need clear price signals and easy-to-use smart-charging solutions. Meanwhile, grid operators could save €4 billion per year if they can access real-time data and flexibility services.
The potential is there. Now, it’s time to turn EVs into powerful grid assets—and put money back into drivers’ pockets.
Eurelectric and EY are taking action. Eurelectric is hosting EVision 2025 in Brussels today to unpack the findings of the report and showcase the latest EV technology. Experts, policymakers, and industry leaders will gather to discuss how to turn EVs into powerful grid assets—and put more money back into drivers’ pockets. Stay tuned on ElectricDrives for a full round-up of the event.
