- The month of May saw the best global month on record when it comes to EV market share, with fully-electric cars accounting for approximately 16.75% of global passenger car sales in the month.
- These latest statistics compiled by New AutoMotive highlight the growing trend towards EVs worldwide, but still displays significant disparities when looking at EV market share on a country-by-country basis.
- Worldwide in May, 1.03 million fully-electric cars were registered, marking an impressive 18% year-on-year increase.
Electric cars continue to rise in popularity, across the globe
New AutoMotive’s data takes into account car sales figures from 45 countries around the world, with these countries accounting for around 80% of global passenger car sales – painting a fairly accurate picture on which sales direction electric cars are taking on a global scale. The market share of 16.75% represents a 1.03% rise compared to May 2024, though on a per-country basis we’ve seen much higher rises over the last twelve months.
The new data also shows us which countries are leading the way in market share. In first place, it’s no surprise to see Norway, the biggest champion of mass EV adoption, with a rolling twelve-month EV market share figure of 93%. That’s an impressive lead from the country with the second highest EV market share, Denmark, which stands at 59%. Denmark has seen significant investments into its EV infrastructure this year, which will likely help push that figure further. In third, fourth, and fifth place came Singapore, the Netherlands, and Sweden, with rolling market share figures of 37%, 37%, and 36% respectively.
The United States’ overall EV market share still lags behind other countries, and recent policy changes which are largely seen as anti-EV are unlikely to assist, despite numerous American OEMs remaining committed to electric vehicles. Even so, the size of its EV market by units registered in May still makes it the second largest EV market in the world, following China.
