Norway edges closer to 100% EV market share

  • Norway, already a leader within Europe for widespread EV adoption, has just recorded its best month ever for electric car sales in terms of market share.
  • For the month of April, electric car share stood at 97%, with the top 38 models sold being fully-electric.
  • In the year-to-date, fully-electric cars have accounted for 92.3% of the market.

100% electric car sales in Norway is just around the corner

The latest sales figures compiled by the Norwegian Road Federation show that April 2025 was the best month for EV sales on record, in terms of overall market share. The top three electric models contributing towards this achievement, in order, were the Tesla Model Y, Volkswagen ID.4, and Toyota bZ4X. Despite the Model Y remaining in pole position for now, the country has noted a year-on-year drop in Tesla’s market share – which stands at 11% of all cars sold this year, compared to 18% of all cars over the same period in 2024. Tesla’s drop in market share seems to be part of a wider European trend – with Volkswagen recently becoming the best selling EV brand across Europe as a whole, overtaking Tesla for the first time.

These statistics put Norway far ahead of its European neighbours, such as the United Kingdom, where fully-electric cars currently account for just under 20% of new cars sold – with that country working towards a later ICE phaseout goal of 2030 (and 2035 for hybrids).

Such a high market share has been seen consistently in the country over both 2025 and 2024, with last year seeing overall electric car market share stand at 89.4%. With this now at 92.3% for the year-to-date, it’s seems increasingly likely that Norway will be successful in achieving its goal of phasing out all new petrol and diesel car sales by the end of the year, making it the first country in the world to do so.

Oyvind Solberg, Director of the OFV, commented:

“We have never seen that we have to go so far down the list of new car sales before something other than an electric car appears. This gives the electric car country Norway another record.”
