  • Energy provider EDF and EV leasing provider Drive Electric have launched a new deal to entice more UK customers to make the switch to electric.
  • Under the offer, customers who lease an EV through Drive Electric and sign up to EDF’s EV-specific GoElectric energy tariff will be offered £130 worth of free account credit.
  • If all home charging is carried out during off-peak hours, this could allow for up to 5,000 miles of free driving for the typical EV.

Energy providers continue to launch free charging offers to encourage the EV transition

Upon choosing an electric car lease through Drive Electric, buyers will now have the option to register their interest in switching to EDF’s tariff and benefit from the 5,000 miles worth of free charging (which comes in the form of a £130 account credit).

EDF’s GoElectric tariff grants an off-peak charging rate of 9p per kWh, between the hours of midnight and 5am. For an EV with a 52kWh battery pack, such as the top-spec Renault 5, this would equate to a full charge for the cost of just under £4.70 – highlighting a dramatic saving versus the cost of fuelling an ICE car or relying on public EV charging.

EDF’s own calculations suggest that for the average EV, the £130 charging credit offered as part of the deal will be enough to take an EV around 5,000 miles. The offer is open to UK customers between the 12th of August and the 1st of November, with customers receiving the £130 credit to their account within 60 days of the start date of their EDF GoElectric tariff.

Rich Hughes, Director of Retail at EDF, commented:

“We know that lower driving costs are a major attraction for most drivers when switching to electric driving, so we’re pleased, at EDF, to be able to offer customers the full solution. At a time when more EV’s are becoming eligible for government grants, we’re offering 5,000 free miles up front, along with a comprehensive package that covers leasing, charging, and energy savings. It’s everything drivers need to make the switch to electric driving an easy choice. Additionally, with our recent five-star TrustPilot rating for customer service, customers can feel confident they’re in safe hands.”

EDF joins a growing number of energy providers who are partnering with EV leasing firms to encourage more to make the switch to electric. E.ON Next and Select Car Leasing also launched a similar offer earlier this year, allowing for up to 8,000 miles of EV driving without any energy costs.
