- Vehicle-to-grid (V2G) charging is ready to hit the mainstream, after EV charger manufacturer Easee announced its one millionth charger sale – a Charge Pro, the first V2G-ready commercial unit to be launched by the brand.
- The Easee Charge Pro is designed specifically for large charging sites, with a charging power of 22kW.
- With its V2G readiness, this charger has the potential to further slash costs for EV fleet operators, allowing users to strike the optimal balance between charging up and giving back to the grid.
Will V2G chargers help overcome grid constraints and boost EV adoption?
Electric vehicles are already more than up to the task as becoming suitable replacements for existing ICE vehicles in commercial fleets. However, there is still a considerable barrier to adoption when it comes to installing related charging infrastructure, thanks to grid constraints.
Grid constraints can often hinder the rollout of further charging infrastructure are becoming a challenge for CPOs and fleet operators, particularly in Europe, and that strain will only increase as more individuals and businesses make the switch to EV. In many cases, businesses will need to apply for additional grid connections to make larger pieces of new charging infrastructure feasible – but the lead time on these applications can often take months or years.
This is where V2G technology is set to play an emerging role, allowing EVs to send energy back to the grid via the charger, in times of demand. Combined with scheduling software, this can be achieved whilst also ensuring an EV is fully charged when it needs to be driven. It’s not just the grid constraint that can be seen as a benefit, with V2G also providing the opportunity for operators to make additional revenue by selling energy back to the grid at times of demand.
The Charge Pro will be integrated into Easee’s smart charging network, allowing each charge point to balance energy on a regional level, manage peak loads, and prioritise charging to take place during hours with higher levels of renewable energy (which usually equates to cheaper energy).
However, with its V2G readiness, the Easee Pro could also play a crucial role in a world where EVs and EV infrastructure can be further expanded without the worry of grid constraints. The onus remains on energy providers and vehicle manufacturers to also become compatible with the technology, but with multiple developments taking place in the V2G industry right now, and Easee creating a widespread network and advancing progress in the mission to balance the grid, that reality could be just around the corner.
Anthony Fernandez, CEO of Easee, commented:
“Since founding Easee in 2018, our goal has always been to make the transition to electric mobility smoother, smarter, and more accessible. A million chargers sold is a proud moment—not just for the numbers, but for what it represents: trusted products, made in Norway, serving real needs across Europe.
With Charge Pro, we’re continuing that journey, building a charging ecosystem that can support drivers, businesses, and the grid alike.”
