- My first experience driving an EV was surprisingly smooth and quiet, a welcome change from the noise of a traditional fuel engine.
- Charging the MG4 was easier and quicker than expected, with a well-developed charging infrastructure in Denmark
- Driving an EV proved to be significantly more cost-effective compared to my fuel car, with lower “fuel” and maintenance costs.
As a non-EV owner, working in emobility, I’ve always been fascinated to truly experience an electric vehicle (EV). What are EVs like to drive? How easy are EVs to charge? How different is an EV compared to my 16 year old Mazda 2? Is the charging infrastructure robust enough in Denmark to cope with the emobility transition?
Below is an overview of my experience. At times it might be a little basic, but the industry propels itself into the Early Mainstream, this reflects what many will experience for the first time as they grapple and come to terms with all the learnings of owning an EV for the first time…
Initial Reactions
Honestly, I was a bit sceptical at first. How can a car start and drive on a battery, not an internal combustion engine (ICE)? But my first drive from the MG Motor Denmark headquarters was incredibly smooth. Usually, I’m so used to the low rumble generated by the ICE, but with an EV, I didn’t even think about it. The silence was a welcome change from the constant noise of my own ICE vehicle.
Driving Experience
I’ve seen EV reviews online and was always amazed by their quick acceleration. I’m not a big fan of high-speed, but I had to test it out. On a free stretch of highway with no cars around, I floored it. Wow, it felt like taking off in an aeroplane! And it’s not the same emotion as from an ICE vehicle. Just trust me, if you haven’t yet, you have to try it out yourself.
Over the two weeks, I drove in all sorts of weather – from sunny days to thunderstorms – and the car handled everything perfectly. I felt safe and in control the whole time.
The smoothness of the drive was something I quickly fell in love with. No gear shifts, just seamless, immediate torque. Whether I was commuting on a daily basis around the city or cruising on the highway, the MG4’s performance never let me down.
Charging Experience
I always thought charging an EV would be a hassle – waiting around forever while it charged. But driving the MG4 Long Range, which has a 520 km range (around 380-400 km on the highway with the A/C on, my phone charging and an average speed of 110 km/h / 68 mph), changed my mind.
My first charge was at a Norlys rapid charger of 150 kWh. It took the battery from 10% to 80% in just 25 minutes. I used that time to stretch, use the restroom, and check my route – pretty much what I’d do during a fuel stop, but more relaxing, as you understand that you have nowhere to hurry until the car is charged.
Charging turned out to be a nice way to take necessary breaks during long trips. Plus, the charging infrastructure in Denmark is great, with lots of fast-charging stations, which made planning my routes incredibly easy.
Cost Considerations
In two weeks, I drove about 2000 km (1242 miles) around Denmark. Charging cost me 890 DKK (£103 / €121 / $130). In contrast, driving my old Mazda 2 for the same distance would have cost 1933 DKK (£220 / €259 / $278).
Sure, charging takes longer than refuelling, but I used that time to rest. Charging stations are everywhere, and home charging options are reasonably priced in Denmark. Plus, EVs have much lower taxes than ICE vehicles.
The financial savings were a big surprise. Not only did I spend less on “fuel,” but EVs also have lower maintenance and tax costs. It’s clear that driving an EV is more cost-efficient, after the initial outlay, whether you commute daily around the city or plan a long trip.
Personal Reflections
Switching from an ICE vehicle to an EV was easier than I thought. The new technology and the idea of charging instead of fueling didn’t bother me at all. For daily routines like commuting and errands, the EV was perfect. I didn’t miss my fuel car one bit. Even though I don’t have a home charging station, I used a nearby Clever charging station twice. I’d leave the car overnight and pick it up fully charged in the morning. Super convenient.
Future Considerations
After experiencing the cost savings and convenience, I’m seriously considering buying an EV. I thought I’d start with a Hybrid Plug-In, but now I’m thinking of going straight from an ICE car to an EV. The benefits – financial and environmental – make a strong case for making the switch.
A good question to EV Owners: What EV would you suggest I purchase and why?
Lastly, I’d like to thank MG Motor Denmark for giving me the chance to test drive an MG4 for two weeks and experience an EV for the first time.
