What are the best cheap EVs to buy in the USA?
For the purposes of this article, prices are listed in USD, and do not include potential extra destination charges or potential federal tax credits or state incentives that may reduce the final cost of the EV.
Nissan Leaf

The Nissan Leaf was the pioneer of the consumer EV market, following the first model back in 2010. The third-generation Nissan Leaf, new for 2026, remains one of the most affordable ways into a new electric vehicle in the US, reducing entry barriers to EV ownership.
Going on sale soon across the US, pricing will initially start at $29,990 for the ‘S+’ model. That low price doesn’t give any compromise on battery range however, with this model carrying a 75kWh battery pack which offers an EPA-estimated range of 303 miles. This affordable model still packs a decent list of standard equipment, including wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, remote climate control, a 28-inch driver display, and more. With the front-driven electric motor offering up 214 horsepower, it’s got more than enough power to easily merge onto highways too.
Further down the line, Nissan will also release a more entry-level ‘S’ specification, with a price tag even lower than the initial launch price of $29,990.
Tesla Model 3

The Tesla Model 3 is a little more expensive than the other cars on this list, but it still offers a great value when you consider the combination of performance, technology, and tight-knit public charging integration you get for the price.
Prices for the Model 3 start at $36,990, and even this entry-level specification still offers an EPA range of 321 miles, and an impressive 0-60mph time of 5.8 seconds. You’ll need to pay extra for features such as full self-driving, however.
Chevrolet Bolt

Arriving this year, the all-new Chevrolet Bolt will return as one of the most affordable electric cars on the market. At launch, the starting price will be $29,990, identical to the Leaf. Later down the line, Chevrolet will release a more affordable specification with prices starting at $28,995.
The new Bolt uses LFP batteries to keep its price down, whilst also offering a longer driving range than the previous generation Bolt – up at 255 miles, compared to 238 miles before.
Hyundai Kona Electric

The Kona Electric is another affordable compact SUV on this list, offering a compelling blend of range, tech, and utility in a segment-favorite
crossover package.
The entry-level Kona Electric SE starts at approximately $32,795 USD. With an EPA estimated range of 261 miles, and standard equipment
such as Hyundai’s dual-screen infotainment setup, connectivity features, and a spacious cabin, this is a great affordable all rounder to finish off the list.
