Cardiff Council is preparing for an EV future with 100 new public charge points
Cardiff Council is supporting the installation of up to 100 new EV chargers over the next two years. This initiative is part of the newly published “Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Roadmap.” The plan aims to help the city transition to electric vehicles and reduce carbon emissions.
The council will focus on areas with limited off-street parking. In doing so, they’re making the electric transition possible for many more residents.

Most of the chargers will be standard, offering 7kW of power. Some fast chargers, providing up to 50kW, will also be available. Importantly, these chargers will be delivered and maintained at no cost to the council through private partnerships.
The city aims to grow the number of public charging points significantly
By 2025/2026, Cardiff hopes to have around 600 to 700 charging points, up from 200 today.
Cabinet Member for Climate Change, Strategic Planning and Transport, Cllr Dan De’Ath said:
“With more and more people making greener choices such as switching to an electric vehicle, demand analysis suggests that there may be a need for around 2,000 public charging sockets in Cardiff by 2030.
“While many charging facilities in the city will be provided commercially or by private households with their own off-street parking, there will be a need for us to ensure that charging facilities are available in areas with little off-street parking – starting with the roll out of another 100 charging points over the next two years.”
As the electric vehicle market evolves, the council plans to keep its approach flexible. They will explore various charging technologies and strategies for faster charging options. The Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Roadmap will be discussed at the Cardiff Council Cabinet meeting on October 17th, 2024.
