- Global CPO, ChargePoint, has secured over $19 million in funding from the US’ National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) scheme, which will significantly boost the EV charging infrastructure along California’s major highways.
- With the funding, which requires that eligible charging sites are built along designated ‘alternative fuel corridors’, ChargePoint will construct 248 DC fast chargers, spread across 45 specific charging sites.
- Most of these new California-located sites will use ChargePoint’s ‘Express Plus’ charging station design, which includes charging speeds of up to 500kW – enough to make the most of even the fastest charging EVs on the North American market.
Big boost for California EV charging
The funding is another win for EV infrastructure in California, and is part of the $32 million worth of NEVI funding that has been awareded to the state of California, to build another 458 DC fast chargers across the state’s major roads. California already holds a significant majority of the total number of EV chargers in the United States, with this addition helping further position the state’s pro-EV stance.
ChargePoint, through its partners, has already been awarded a significant chunk of money from the NEVI pot, which is open to applications from all U.S. states, alongside Washington D.C. and Puerto Rico. So far, the CPO has been awarded a total of nearly $90 million, to build approximately 700 chargepoints, covering 150 sites, in 21 U.S. states.
Rick Wilmer, President and CEO of ChargePoint, commented:
“ChargePoint remains committed to delivering world-class solutions for every charging scenario, at-home and on the go. With the latest awards from California, ChargePoint and its partners continue to open NEVI-funded fast charging locations across the United States, ensuring all EV drivers can access charging when and where they need it via the ChargePoint mobile app.”
For drivers of General Motors EVs in California, this addition isn’t the only good news this week, as GM drivers have now been given access to Tesla’s US-wide Supercharger network – with over 5,000 such chargepoints in the state.
