Be.EV launches initiative to combat charging cable theft

Be.EV is taking action against the growing issue of charging cable theft. In partnership with Formula Space and Derbyshire Police, they have launched the “Charging Hub Intelligent Protection” (CHIP) initiative in Chesterfield.
Charging cable theft poses a significant problem across the UK. Thieves target the cables for the copper wiring inside. The damage disrupts services for EV drivers and costs the industry over £500,000 annually in repairs, replacements, and lost revenue. To combat this issue, Be.EV is urging other charge point operators to adopt strengthened security measures.
Adrian Fielden-Gray, COO of Be.EV, said:
“Cable theft is an absolute nightmare for everyone – especially drivers. It’s completely unacceptable to find a charging cable cut when you’re looking to top up – and for what reason? There’s hardly any money to be gained from doing this – it’s completely pointless and makes the experience worse for everyone.”
Be.EV is showcasing new security features at the 85 Saltergate Charging Hub. The hub now has a mobile CCTV system that operates 24/7, alongside a tannoy system that warns potential thieves they are being recorded.

In addition, installing SelectaDNA-protected cables allows for easy tracing if stolen. Each cable features a unique DNA coating, making it easier for police to identify stolen cables and hold offenders accountable.
PCSO Emma Shimwell at Derbyshire Police, added:
“It’s essential for all of us – charge point operators and law enforcement alike – to collaborate effectively and implement robust security measures, just like at Be.EV’s new site protection initiative here at this Chesterfield Hub.”
