Australia and New Zealand kick off this year’s World EV Day™ celebrations

  • With Monday the 9th of September underway in Australia and New Zealand, marking the start of this year’s World EV Day™, the two nations both have several activations planned.
  • World EV Day™ is now in its fifth anniversary, of what is the biggest opportunity to unite people and businesses around the world in promoting the shift to electric mobility.
  • From discounted public EV charging to commitments on zero-emission delivery vans, here are the ways the two countries are seeing in the fifth World EV Day™.

World EV Day™ is underway in Australasia

Electric vehicles have already had a successful year across the two countries, with Australia registering over 63,000 new electric cars in the year-to-date. Meanwhile, in New Zealand, around 9.3% of cars sold this year were fully electric – which compares to only 1% in 2018, showing significant growth, but also the need to continue promoting EVs to the mainstream.

Firstly, bp pulse is offering a 15% public charging discount to mark the day, which will be available not only across the 140-plus charging stations dotted across Australia and New Zealand, but its worldwide network of over 35,700 individual charge points, too. In New Zealand, electric car sharing firm GoTo will be offering free charging at its public station in the city of Tauranga, in the north of the country. This is part of a wider global effort from CPOs on World EV Day™ to offer both discounted and free charging, too. As World EV Day™ rolls around the timezones of the globe, UK-based RAW Charging will also be offering completely free EV charging across its locations at shopping centres, pubs, and National Trust properties.

Additionally, Australia’s leading last mile delivery firm, ANC, who deliver to customers on behalf of firms such as IKEA and DIY store Bunnings, is, for the second year in a row, a partner for this 2024’s World EV Day™. The firm is committed to adding 112 electric vehicles to its fleet and additional charging stations over the next two years, as it hopes for 30% of its fleet to be fully electric by 2028.

On the EV meetups side, the Australian Electric Vehicle Association (AEVA) is celebrating the day with an event at the Canberra Institute of Technology. A wide range of EVs will be on display, along with their respective owners, ready to answer questions to the public, alongside the chance to tour the EV training facilities within the Institute of Technology.

Ade Thomas, Founder of World EV Day™, commented:

“I often get asked the basic question, what is World EV Day™? Is it an event? Is it a PR activity? These prince incentives show that it is so much more than that: it delivers real-world, tangible campaigns and incentives, like these pricing activations, and EV meet-ups, which exist as peer-to-peer education campaigns, with EV drivers sharing insights.”
