92% of EV drivers would never go back to ICE, global survey finds

  • A survey undertaken by the Global EV Alliance, which brings together a network of national EV driving associations from across the world, such as EVA England, has polled over 23,000 EV drivers across 18 countries in its ‘Global EV Driver Survey’ for 2024.
  • The results show a key, positive statistic for EV adoption – with 92% of respondents stating that they would stick with an EV for their next car purchase.
  • While these statistics show that those who have experienced an EV have high satisfaction, the industry still faces the challenge of getting those who have never been behind the wheel of an EV before to make the switch.

The vast majority of EV drivers will remain electric

While 92% of respondents stated they would stick with an EV, a higher 97% stated that they were either ‘satisfied’ or ‘very satisfied’ with being an EV driver. Of the remaining 8% of EV drivers who stated they wouldn’t pick an EV again as their next car, 4% stated they would opt for a plug-in hybrid – seen by some as a stepping stone towards fully-electric ownership. Meanwhile, just 1% would opt for a pure petrol or diesel vehicle as their next purchase.

From these 23,254 respondents, the top three motivators for purchasing their EV were, in order, lower operating costs, reduced impact on the global climate, and benefits for the local environment and reduced noise. These insights will be key for automakers trying to reach out to the prospective early mainstream EV audience.

Joel Levin, Chair of Global EV Alliance and Director of Plug In America, commented on the results:

“This is a remarkably high number and the results confirm that drivers love the EV experience and EVs are here to stay. These results confirm that EV drivers are highly satisfied with their choice, and that reports of declining EV popularity are greatly exaggerated.”
