Polestar tackles battery anxiety with new Health Certificates to spur used electric vehicle sales

Polestar is boosting confidence in the second-hand electric vehicle market by introducing battery health certificates for all pre-owned Polestar 2 models.

That concern is widespread. According to a recent Autocar survey, 75% of UK drivers have “serious concerns” about buying a second-hand EV. The condition of the battery is the number one issue.

But research suggests those fears may be overblown. A report from late 2024 showed that EV battery life could be up to 40% longer than previously estimated. Most electric car batteries retain strong performance for years—even after tens of thousands of miles.

Polestar’s battery certificate forms part of an extensive 112-point inspection process. Each used vehicle also comes with a 24-month warranty, the balance of the original 8-year battery warranty, and over-the-air (OTA) software updates that keep even older models current with the latest features.

Matt Galvin, Managing Director of Polestar UK, commented:

“As more pre-owned Polestars start to come on the market, it offers a lower price entry-point to join the Polestar family and experience our performance EVs with all the software features of our new cars.

And where customers may have been apprehensive about a five-year-old Polestar 2 and its battery condition, once again Polestar is giving car buyers transparency and providing peace of mind in the same way we do with our climate impact.”

The move comes less than 12 months after Volvo, co-owner of Polestar, introduced the world’s first battery passport. This digital record details each battery’s origin, carbon footprint, and composition, adding another layer of transparency for future EV buyers.

With longer-lasting batteries, clearer information, and added consumer protections, the used EV market is finally hitting its stride. And Polestar is putting itself at the front of the charge. Increased transparency is the way forwards to allow drivers to make the switch with utmost confidence.
