- Volvo has published its September 2024 passenger car sales figures, helping to track the progress of its BEV transition for the year.
- A total of 15,243 fully-electric models were sold globally in the month of September, with Europe accounting for a significant 11,760 of these.
- The 15k sales figure compares to only 9,205 in September of 2023, marking a 66% year-on-year boost.
Volvo BEV sales continue to grow – if not as fast as it originally hoped
The rise in BEV sales for Europe specifically was even higher – with 11,760 sold last month, compared to 6,221 in September 2023 – an 89% change. The manufacturer still has some way to go to convince all European buyers to switch to BEVs, however, with 8,954 PHEVs, and 10,562 mild hybrid/ICE models sold within the same period.
Overall, however, it’s a positive picture for Volvo Cars, particularly after it had to pull back on its 2030 commitment to only sell fully-electric models, last month, citing market conditions. It’s still fully committed to EVs in the longer term, with the firm planning to go fully-electric at a later, undefined date. This commitment was further displayed this week with Bloomberg reporting that the OEM is leading a a group of firms, lobbying the European Union to maintain its future 2035 ICE ban.
