Volkswagen have introduced their latest electric vehicle (EV), the ID.5 GTX sports utility vehicle (SUV) coupé. It is set to make its international exhibition debut on 7 September disguised as a concept at the IAA Munich Motor Show.
The is the brand’s first electric coupé and is a crossover vision of VW’s popular ID.4 SUV. Once again based on the brand’s Modular Electric Drive Matrix (MEB) electric platform found on the ID.3 and ID.4. It comes with an elegant design and a powerful dual-motor four-wheel-drive set-up.
The abbreviation GTX represents the brand’s new athleticism. It’s the equivalent of Volkswagen’s GTI in the combustion engine world. It features electric motors on both the front and rear axles to deliver all-wheel-drive performance, good traction and sporty handling.
It’s powered by a 77kWh lithium-ion battery that’s located battery between the axles to improve handling. This will deliver a projected range of up to 309 miles (497km).
The ID.5 GTX will arrive with dealers next year and will be the second model from the brand’s sporty GTX range following the ID.4 GTX. The ID.5 GTX is also fully connected and can receive updates over-the-air because it’s fitted with Car2X technology.
