Following last week’s news and sketches of Volkswagen‘s new ID.AERO, the company has revealed its concept version in China. This is Volkswagen’s first electric saloon and will be aimed at the premium mid-size saloon segment.
The new ID.AERO joins Volkswagen’s all-electric range, which includes the ID.3 hatchback, ID.4 sports utility vehicle (SUV), ID.5 saloon-style crossover, ID.BUZZ and ID.CARGO and ID.6 seven-seater which is currently available in China.
The ID.AERO has a progressive, stylish and aerodynamic design which remains distinctively Volkswagen ID., especially the front end, which we like. The production version for China is expected to go on sale in the second half of 2023.
Volkswagen is also planning to start production of a European series version in its Emden plant, with the first vehicles rolling off the line in 2023. With the volume production of electric vehicles, Emden will be one of the first Volkswagen plants of this kind in Lower Saxony. Plus, it will make a solid contribution to electrifying the model range and reducing the CO2 emissions of the overall new vehicle fleet.
Ralf Brandstätter, Volkswagen CEO, said: “With the ID. AERO show car, we are revealing a preview of the next member of the ID. family. A car with an emotional and at the same time extremely aerodynamic design, a range of over 380 miles (600km), an extraordinary amount of space and a premium interior.
“With our ACCELERATE strategy, we are intensively driving forward the electrification of our model range. Following the ID.4, this model will be our next global car for Europe, China and the US. ”
The concept vehicle is almost five metres long and was designed based on aerodynamic principles for maximum efficiency. The roof slopes to the rear in a coupé style and contributes to achieving an excellent drag coefficient of 0.23. Volkswagen’s modular electric drive matrix (MEB) additionally allows for short overhangs, a long wheelbase and a spacious vehicle interior.
The ID. AERO is equipped with a 77kWh lithium-ion battery and with the combination of its aerodynamics and efficient drive system it offers up to 385 miles (620km) of range. This makes it ideal for longer trips and commuting which you would expect a premium saloon car to be used for.
One neat feature of the ID. AERO concept vehicle is the Polar Light Blue Metallic paint finished. This light metallic colour shade has colour pigments that create a golden shimmer effect in certain light conditions. The roof is painted in a high-gloss black to contrast with the body.
Like the other electric vehicles (EVs) in the ID. family, the ID. AERO is based on Volkswagen’s purely electric MEB architecture, which can be adapted for vehicles of different shapes and sizes. The MEB platform also offers maximum digital connectivity and over-the-air update capability.
