Volkswagen ID.4 and ID.5 to be retired, replaced with ID. Tiguan

Volkswagen continues phase out of numerical EV model names, with new electric SUV to be called the ID. Tiguan

In a sign that Volkswagen is further bringing its EV lineup into the mainstream, the manufacturer has confirmed that the ID.4 EV’s successor will be called the ID. Tiguan, taking the model name from the ICE Tiguan which has already been established as a model for nearly two decades with over 8 million examples sold, bringing a familiar name into the EV era.

Volkswagen continues its new EV naming strategy

The ID. Tiguan becomes the third model in Volkswagen’s ID. line-up to drop the numerical naming strategy in favour of an established model name, following the new ID. Polo and ID. Cross. Volkswagen has already shared images of a prototype, which show a significant design shift away from the rounded ID.4. The electric ID. Tiguan and its combustion-engined Tiguan sibling are now set to look much more alike, and it reflects a strategy many manufacturers are adopting to market their EVs, particularly as new models carry far fewer compromises than earlier electric cars. They are increasingly cars first, and EVs second.

The full reveal of the ID. Tiguan is set to take place this October, with the first examples arriving to customers in 2027. Volkswagen haven’t shared many details so far, but it’ll likely bring significant improvements in range and technology over the outgoing ID.4 and ID.5 models.

Thomas Schäfer, CEO of the Volkswagen Brand, commented:

“More than 8.3 million Tiguan vehicles produced demonstrate the strength and trust associated with this model name. The Tiguan represents a versatile, premium vehicle and embodies the essence of True Volkswagen. With the ID. Tiguan, we are carrying this product promise into the electric future. The all-electric model builds on the strengths of the bestseller and offers premium design, generous space, intuitive operation and innovative technologies. Together, both models form a strong offering for our customers’ different powertrain preferences.”
