- Following stalling Volkswagen EV sales over the previous months, the manufacturer has announced a €3,000 price drop for its electric ID.3 hatchback, beginning in October.
- The discount has only been applied to German sales so far, but time will tell whether the deal will be rolled out across the European markets where the ID.3 is sold.
- Combined with the ongoing €3,570 ’emobility bonus’ that Volkswagen Germany is offering on its EV range until the new year, this means the ID.3 can now be purchased in the country for €29,760.
Volkswagen ID.3 drops below the crucial 30k mark in Germany
This price drop now means that in Volkswagen’s home territory of Germany, the ID.3, in base-level ‘Pure’ spec, now comes in cheaper than a key rival, the BYD Dolphin – which starts at a higher €32,990 in the country. The price reduction comes after Volkswagen has had to cut EV sales forecasts and profits, amid a lack of new EV sales for the manufacturer. This reduction could help counter that, encouraging consumer confidence in purchasing an EV. Combined with recent EU tariffs against Chinese-made EVs, this could help increase ID.3 sales.
The reduction also means that in Germany, the ID.3 has almost achieved price parity with its ICE-powered counterpart, the Volkswagen Golf. The ID.3’s new base price of €29,760 is only slightly higher than the Golf’s starting price of €28,330 – but the ID.3 will be cheaper to run, and have more powerful acceleration than the entry-level Golf’s combustion engine. Price parity on new EVs has already been achieved in the UK, with the new Vauxhall Frontera, so it remains to be seen whether ID.3 rolls out this price discount further.
Volkswagen’s Board Member for Sales, Marketing and After Sales at Volkswagen Passenger Cars, Martin Sander, added:
“Our goal is to get as many customers as possible excited about switching to electric Volkswagens. Attractive entry-level prices play an important role in this. We have worked intensively on our internal costs. That is why we can now offer the ID.3 Pure at a significantly lower price.”
