Volkswagen delivers 27 percent more all-electric cars in first half year

The Volkswagen Group have announced it increased deliveries of its all-electric vehicles (EVs) by 27 percent in the first six months year-on-year. This follows the news that the Volkswagen Group saw electric vehicle (EV) deliveries rise by 65 percent year-on-year in the first quarter of 2022.

Despite supply bottlenecks, a temporary stop of production in Europe and Covid-related lockdowns in China, 217,100 battery electric vehicles (BEVs) have been handed over to customers in the first half year. This is up from 170,900 in the prior-year period.

The BEV share of total deliveries in the first half of the year reached a level of 5.6 percent, up from 3.4 percent in the first half of 2021. The biggest growth driver was China with 63,500 BEVs with a more than three-fold increase versus the prior-year period.

In terms of BEV deliveries by region, Europe was still clearly in the lead, with 128,800 vehicles, 59 percent share of the Group’s total, in the first six months. The second biggest BEV market for the Group was China with 63,500 deliveries (29 percent). The USA corresponded to eight percent of the Group’s global BEV deliveries with 17,000 vehicles.

By the end of June, the core brand Volkswagen delivered 115,900 BEVs to customers, 59 percent of the Group’s share. This was followed by Audi with 50,000 vehicles (23 percent), ŠKODA with 22,200 vehicles (10 percent), Porsche with 18,900 vehicles (9 percent) and SEAT/CUPRA with 8,300  (4 percent).

This is good news for Volkswagen and the growth in electric cars, despite the global shortage of semiconductors. Earlier this year, it was announced earlier this year that Volkswagen have sold out of electric vehicles (EVs) for the year in Europe and the USA according to a feature in the Financial Times. This was because persistent supply chain bottlenecks have hit the German carmaker’s global production.

Hildegard Wortmann, Volkswagen Group Board Member of Sales, said: “We successfully continued our electric ramp-up despite challenging conditions, especially in the second quarter. Demand continues to be strong and we expect an improving supply situation in the second half of the year.

“June BEV deliveries showed a clear upward trend already to the monthly levels of Q4 2021. We are working intensively to reduce the high order bank and the delivery times for our customers and are committed to our goal of a BEV share of seven to eight percent for the full year.”

The top selling BEV models in the first half of 2022 from Volkswagen were the ID.4/ID.5 with 66,800 units and the ID.3 26,000 with units. Audi’s e-tron (including Sportback) was third best with 24,700 units while the ŠKODA Enyaq iV (including Coupé) was the fourth best with 22,200 units. The Porsche Taycan and Cross Turismo models rounded out the top five with 18,900 units.
