- The Viking Wind Farm in Shetland, with 103 turbines, now powers nearly 500,000 UK homes with green energy.
- The £580 million project involved Viking Energy, SSE plc, and Shetland Islands Council, creating 400 construction jobs.
- Completion boosts UK wind capacity to 30 GW, supporting renewable EV charging and green energy transition efforts.
Viking Wind Farm goes live and powers nearly half a million homes, and EV charge points, across the UK
The UK’s most productive onshore wind farm, Viking Wind Farm, is now fully operational in Shetland. Viking Energy, SSE plc, and Shetland Islands Council collaborated on the £580 million project. It features 103 Vestas turbines capable of generating 1.8 TWh of electricity annually—enough to power nearly half a million homes.
Another near-500,000 UK homes are being powered with green energy. Furthermore, that means many of those homes will now benefit from 100% green EV charging. Zapmap estimates that around 700,000 chargers have been installed at homes and workplaces across the country. For a real energy transition, all of those charge points must be powered by renewable energy.
Ade Thomas, Founder of Green.TV Media, said:
“A big part of combating fear, uncertainty and doubt, is reassuring people that EV is powered by green energy. There are 0.5 million answers to that question in this new onshore wind power initiative from SSE and Vestas.”
Construction of the 443 MW wind farm began in September 2020 and concluded in August 2024. Around 400 jobs were created during construction. 35 full-time positions for local operation and maintenance will continue throughout its lifespan. Viking’s completion pushes the UK’s total onshore and offshore wind capacity beyond 30 GW. That’s enough to supply power to 26 million homes annually.
With negative media plaguing EV sales, and contributing to the fear, uncertainty and doubt of EV adoption, this news is an incredibly positive step towards the nation’s transition.
