- Charging an electric car on the go in the UK has never been easier, with government figures showing that over 17,000 public EV chargepoints have been added to the UK network since July 2024 – a 27% year-on-year rise.
- The news now means that over 82,000 chargepoints are live across the UK, helping to support the early mainstream in their transition to electric vehicles.
- With the new figure inspiring charging confidence, the government is hoping that its new Electric Car Grant scheme can drive up EV adoption further.
UK charging infrastructure continues to grow
The additional growth of 17,370 public chargers over the last twelve months has been particularly noticable in regions of the North East, the East of England, and the Midlands, which have seen the biggest growth in new charging infrastructure. This impressive growth right across the country has been enabled by a number of CPOs with rapid expansion plans: IONITY, Be.EV, Source, and InstaVolt, just to name a few.
Specifically looking at larger capacity charging hubs, growth in this charging area has also been impressive. Recent statistics from Zapmap show that the UK now has around 673 charging hubs, a remarkable 25% rise since the start of the year.
While public EV charging infrastructure will play a key role in enabling EV travel, it’s still crucial that as many drivers as possible are able to benefit from more affordable home charging. The UK recently launched a £25 million cross-pavement charging scheme, in an attempt to address this point for those without off-street parking.
Future of Roads Minister, Lilian Greenwood, commented:
“Just last week we announced record discounts to help make EV ownership a reality for thousands more people, alongside making it easier to charge at home so more drivers can run their EV for as little as 2p a mile – that’s London to Birmingham for £2.50.
Today’s chargepoint figures show that alongside lowering upfront costs, we’re also making fantastic progress towards expanding our charging network across the UK. With a new chargepoint added to the network every half an hour, we’re helping put range anxiety firmly in the rear-view mirror.”
Ben Nelmes, CEO of New AutoMotive, reacted:
“It’s fantastic to see the charge point rollout keeping pace with the electric car revolution, proving the ZEV mandate is delivering for drivers. This lockstep growth is the market and government working hand in hand, giving more and more people the confidence to make the switch. With the mandate providing a clear roadmap, we are getting it done and paving the way for a zero-emission future on UK roads.”
