- The first megawatt-scale eHGV charging hub has now opened in the UK, with a new site in the East Midlands helping to charge up Kuehne+Nagel’s growing electric truck fleet.
- The new site has been opened as part of the eFREIGHT 2030 consortium, a group of eHGV manufacturers, fleet operators, and eHGV charging providers who are helping to drive adoption in the sector forward.
- Initially, the new charging hub will support 12 electric trucks within Kuehne+Nagel’s fleet, ensuring they can be charged up in record time.
Megawatt charging becomes a reality for eHGVs in the UK
The new site at East Midlands Gateway is the first of 25 megawatt-scale charging hubs set to be rolled out across the UK, marking a significant boost to the country’s electric truck charging infrastructure. This first location has been designed and implemented with the help of British EV charging specialists Voltempo, a lead partner of the eFREIGHT 2030 consortium.
Six truck charging bays are in place at the new site, powered by Voltempo’s HyperCharger megawatt charging solution. This will allow high levels of charging power to be delivered to each individual charging bay, with charging speeds of up to 1,000kW – enough to charge up future electric trucks in as little as 30 minutes.
Kate Broome, Sustainability and Social Impact Director at Kuehne+Nagel, commented:
“As part of eFREIGHT 2030, we’re proud to be working with partners like Voltempo and their innovative technology, alongside vehicle manufacturers DAF and Renault Trucks, to open the first charging hub at our site – a real milestone made possible through collaboration across industry. Located at the heart of our UK road logistics operations, the combination of the HyperCharger and our new electric fleet enables us to deliver more sustainable logistics for our customers at real operational scale.”
Alistair Barnes, Senior Programme Manager at Innovate UK, added:
“We are delighted to support the launch of this pioneering charging hub at Kuehne+Nagel’s East Midlands Gateway depot. Voltempo’s state-of-the-art HyperCharger is enabling eFREIGHT 2030 to meet the sustainable haulage demands of today and tomorrow. The ZEHID programme, funded by the UK Government and delivered in partnership with Innovate UK, is providing strategic insights into the future of road transport. Powerful partnerships like this are accelerating the transition to zero-emission freight and driving the UK’s clean growth ambitions forward.”
