Transforming school transport: First Student hits 4 million electric school bus miles

  • First Student has driven over 4 million miles on electric school buses, improving safety and reducing noise.
  • The company’s First Charge technology speeds up electrification by cutting installation costs and eliminating trenching needs.
  • First Student plans to replace 30,000 diesel buses with electric ones by 2035, targeting 6 million electric miles.

4 million electric miles: First Student pushes for cleaner, safer school buses

First Student, North America’s largest school transportation provider, has just surpassed 4 million miles driven on electric school buses. The announcement follows their milestone of 3 million electric miles only six months ago. The company is creating safer, quieter, and more environmentally friendly school commutes across North America.

The accelerated pace of electrification is largely due to First Charge, First Student’s unique charging solution. First Charge eliminates the need for costly trenching and works even in cold climates. This technology has already been implemented in over 20 school districts, with 40 more installations in progress.

First Student’s commitment to cleaner rides isn’t stopping at 4 million miles

By the end of the 2024-2025 school year, the company aims to reach 6 million electric miles. During this period, they will deploy 110 new electric buses in 10 districts, complete 167,400 trips, and reduce carbon emissions by an estimated 12,550 tons. Their long-term goal is to transition 30,000 diesel buses to electric by 2035.

One of First Student’s newest projects is a partnership with Con Edison in Brooklyn, New York. This initiative will replace diesel buses with electric buses topped with solar panels. Using advanced battery storage, the project will also allow clean energy to flow back to the city’s grid.

As more districts adopt these solutions, First Student is setting a new standard in student transportation. They’re proving that the future of school buses is safe, quiet, and green.
