The Port of Hamburg sets a course for sustainability with new fast-charging points

  • The Port of Hamburg has opened six fast-charging stations to support freight transport electrification.
  • Powered by 100% sustainable energy, the stations reduce emissions and support green logistics.
  • The Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport funded the project with 262,000 euros to promote climate-friendly infrastructure.

Port of Hamburg opens new fast-charging points for freight transport

The Port has taken a major step towards sustainability with new fast-charging points at the Cruise Center Steinwerder. Mer Germany has installed six CCS2 charging stations capable of delivering up to 300 kW of power.

Commercial vehicles will use the charge points daily, particularly freight tractors. Trucks can charge without needing to unhitch, making the process faster and easier. This convenience is key to successfully electrifying the port’s busy transport operations.

The new charging infrastructure uses entirely sustainable energy. The Hamburg Port Authority (HPA) and its subsidiary, Cruise Gate Hamburg (CGH), have partnered with Mer Germany and truck manufacturer IVECO to make this happen.

The project also provides valuable data on traffic flows and charging needs, which will help shape future logistics strategies. This data will become increasingly valuable as more ports transition around the world.

The Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport (BMDV) is backing the initiative with around 262,000 euros.

Jessica Schneider, Director Private Charging, Mer Germany, commented:

“The Port of Hamburg, as Germany’s largest transhipment point for goods, with its immense challenges in terms of transport and logistics, is an ideal place to show how the electrification of freight logistics can work. We at Mer are delighted to support the Hamburg Port Authority in achieving its environmental protection goals as quickly and efficiently as possible.”

As demand for charging grows, the infrastructure can be expanded to meet future needs. The investment is helping to create a sustainable, more efficient Port of Hamburg.
