- Research from data analysis firm GlobalData shows that Tesla was the most mentioned EV manufacturer on Reddit for the first half of 2024, with more popularity than brands such as Ford, Toyota, and BYD.
- Much of the popularity stems from Tesla’s recent financial performance, and future of the Supercharger network.
- The record comes as EV discussion, in general, becomes increasingly common on social media platforms including Reddit.
Tesla by far the most discussed EV brand on Reddit
The data specifically looked at EV discussions across all of Reddit, specifically from users in the US. The top three discussed brands were Tesla, Toyota, and Ford, with each taking a share of 38%, 12%, and 11%, respectively, across the total EV discussions site-wide. Toyota’s popularity came from some criticism about its watering down of EV targets, and plans to continue developing ICE platforms – in contrast to its rival, Nissan.
Within the top ten brands found by GlobalData, BYD was the only electric vehicle brand from China to make the cut, coming in fourth place, accounting for 9% of discussions. Tesla already has something of a cult following on Reddit in particular, with approximately 2.9 million members, putting it in the top 1% of subreddits by size. Combine that with the fact that Tesla CEO Elon Musk owns one of the largest social media networks in the world, X, and it’s certain that Tesla’s online popularity and presence is here to stay.

“Reddit users articulated a range of perspectives regarding the tariffs imposed on electric vehicles entering the United States, underscoring concerns about potential price increases and diminished access to affordable EV options from China. On the other side, some redditors expressed optimism that the tariffs might stimulate domestic EV manufacturing and bolster employment opportunities.”
