Tesla joins the European 7-seater EV fight, with new Model Y variant

  • Whilst the Tesla Model Y has already been available over the pond in seven-seater form in the U.S. and Canada, the EV manufacturer has made the decision to bring the seating option to Europe also.
  • The move comes as the number of seven-seat electric cars available in Europe grows, with newcomers such as the Peugeot E-5008, Kia EV9, Mercedes EQB, and more.
  • The seven-seat option will be a £2,500 option on the Model Y Long Range All-Wheel Drive, leading to a total on-the-road price of £54,490.

Tesla Model Y gains seven seat option in Europe

With order books already open, the seven-seat option will be available as a £2,500 option. It won’t be available on the cheapest Model Y, the £46,990 Long Range RWD – which was recently given an update to provide a whopping 373 miles of range – instead, only being an option on the slightly more expensive £51,990 Long Range AWD. Whilst the Model X has already been available as a seven-seater in Europe, with its starting price of over £90,000 put it well above the range of those looking for a more affordable, zero-emission way to transport seven people. Plus, its lack of a right-hand-drive option was another drawback for countries like the UK.

At this £54,490 starting price, the seven-seat Model Y will have significant competition. The E-5008, which also offers a premium feel, starts at a slightly lower £48,550, though at that price, it lacks the higher range capability of the Y. On the other hand, this Model Y will still significantly undercut other seven-seat electric cars, such as the Kia EV9 and Volvo EX90, with starting prices of around £65,025 and £96,255 respectively.

We could see more updates to the Tesla Model Y in the future. Rumour has it that the Y will see a design refresh, bringing it into line with the styling of the recently updated Tesla Model 3.
