- The launch of upcoming new Tesla models has been ‘accelerated’ ahead of the previous plan to begin production of the unnamed models in the second half of 2024.
- This will include ‘more affordable models’, which could include a model to slot in below the Model 3 in the manufacturer’s portfolio.
- The news comes shortly after Tesla announced price drops across much of its range.
All-new Tesla vehicles on the way – including cheaper options
The update was announced in Tesla’s Q1 update, published today, with the company stating that new models would be launched ahead of its previous statement, that production of these vehicles would begin in the second half of the year.
Despite the firm marking its lowest profit margin in six years, this statement from Tesla has sent the company’s stock skyrocketing 7.7% in after-hours trading, just one day after it reached its lowest level seen in 2024. It also comes the same day the firm took the wraps off its revised Tesla Model 3 Performance, now available with Porsche Taycan-rivalling levels of performance for a whole lot less.
The company stated that “These new vehicles, including more affordable models, will utilise aspects of the next generation platform as well as aspects of our current platforms, and will be able to be produced on the same manufacturing lines as our current vehicle line-up”. The update further nullifies the previous rumours that Tesla planned to scrap its $25k EV, which Musk himself publicly denounced. What EV segments these affordable models will occupy remains to be seen, however. The report also reaffirmed the company’s commitment to the fully autonomous ‘Robotaxi’ EV.
