SWTCH brings intelligent systems to deter theft, prevent damage, and protect investments

SWTCH Energy has introduced a new suite of anti-theft and vandalism solutions to protect EV charging infrastructure across the US. The company aims to address the growing issue of cable theft and damage at charging stations. Vandalism and theft has become a major concern for property managers and EV drivers alike.

Multifamily and commercial properties are increasingly targeted by vandals and thieves. Boston-based SWTCH has responded with advanced technology that combines artificial intelligence, real-time monitoring.

The new security system functions like a virtual security guard

It uses advanced vision AI to monitor charging stations 24/7. The technology detects human presence and distinguishes between normal charging activities and potential security threats. This smart detection helps reduce false alarms for a more efficient and reliable response.

SWTCH Energy's new security solutions

One key feature is presence-sensing recording. When someone approaches a charging station, the system automatically activates the cameras. This immediate response acts as a visual deterrent, discouraging criminal behaviour before it escalates. If the system detects suspicious activity, it can escalate responses by triggering visual or audio warnings. In more severe cases, it alerts property managers and local authorities.

Another innovation is the instant cable cut detection feature. The system detects any tampering or cutting attempts in real-time, sending immediate alerts to designated contacts. Additionally, each charger is equipped with a reinforced cable sleeve that resists cutting tools. This added layer of physical protection significantly reduces theft risks.

The security units are compact and easy to install on poles or walls, without requiring major infrastructure changes. This makes them ideal for multifamily complexes and commercial properties looking to upgrade security affordably.

Some European initiatives are underway to tackle the same problem across the pond. Evolt Charging has introduced a visual and audible cable alarm that detects cutting or removal attempts, sounding an alarm to deter theft. This technology is being trialled at various sites in partnership with Osprey Charging.

Similarly, Be.EV has launched the “Charging Hub Intelligent Protection” initiative in Chesterfield, collaborating with Formula Space and Derbyshire Police. Security measures at the Saltergate Charging Hub include mobile CCTV, a tannoy system, and SelectaDNA-protected cables, which feature unique DNA coatings for traceability if stolen.

SWTCH’s goal is to enhance safety while supporting the growth of EV infrastructure. With this new suite, SWTCH is tackling EV concerns head-on, with cutting edge security.
