Subaru have released a 25-minute walk around video (see below) of the new Solterra battery electric vehicle (BEV). The Solterra, which is the brand’s first all-electric vehicle (EV), is zero-emissions electric sports utility vehicle (SUV).
The idea behind the new electric SUV is that it is safe, fun and tough. It’s built on the brand’s e-Subaru Global Platform, also known as the e-TNGA electric platform. This has been jointly developed with Toyota Motor Corporation, who have 15 electric vehicles planned by 2025.
It’s a similar size to Subaru’s Forester internal combustion engine (ICE) SUV but in a slicker package with a longer wheelbase, although it does keep the brand’s iconic hexagon grill shape.
The European version of the Solterra is an all-wheel-drive vehicle powered by two separate 80kWh motors on each axle and delivers 335Nm of torque. This makes it great on and off road, yet for a big car, it remains nimble hitting 0-62mph (0-100kph) in 7.6 seconds.
Subaru says that the Solterra should offer a range that’s not too far from 240 miles (400km). Based on Subaru’s research, they found the average Forester driver only does around 31 miles (50km) per day, so this range would be more than ample for most.
The Solterra will be launched by the middle of 2022 in Japan, the United States, Canada, Europe and China. Prices are yet to be confirmed.
