Smart will unveil its latest electric vehicle (EV) later this week at a launch ceremony on April 7 at STATION-Berlin, an historic former train station in the German capital. The new electric car is a deviation from the brand’s smaller cars and the new electric car is a larger crossover style vehicle.
The new electric crossover is the result of a new joint venture between Mercedes-Benz, Smart’s parent company, and Chinese automaker Geely Automobile. Geely is also the parent brand of big names including Lotus, Polestar and Volvo.
With the renewal of its brand, product and business model, smart has entered a new era of development. As a premium all-electric automotive technology brand, Smart is expanding its product portfolio and has officially unveiled the new naming for its new generation of vehicles using a # hashtag.
As the first production model in the family, the new Smart #1 recently completed a series of aerodynamic and winter tests. The latter recently took place in northern China.
In the cold China climate, the new car’s battery and technology systems were pushed to the limit in temperatures as low as minus 40°C. Smart’s European team supported this testing at its development centre in Renningen, Germany.
David Browne, Smart UK CEO, said: “This is a truly exciting time for the smart brand. The upcoming reveal of the Smart #1 is a key milestone in the evolution of our brand, reflecting our history of innovation, outstanding design and space efficiency.
“Our dedicated electric platform and high degree of connectivity make for the ideal electric car to meet the needs of UK car buyers.”
We will bring you all the details of the launch when they arrive later in the week.
