Smart officially launches its new #1 electric car

Smart have officially launched its new #1 electric car at an unveiling in Berlin. Unlike it’s previous micro-sized electric cars, the new #1 is a larger electric crossover style vehicle.

This new electric crossover is the result of a new joint venture between Mercedes-Benz, Smart’s parent company, and Chinese automaker Geely Automobile. Geely is also the parent brand of big names including Lotus, Polestar and Volvo.

At a quick glance, the styling of the #1 reminded us of a more round version of the MINI, which is no bad thing. We think it’s a good looking smaller electric crossover from the exterior.

It features concealed electric door handles, frameless doors and a neat floating halo roof. The #1 measures 4270mm in length with a 2750mm wheelbase and comes with slick 19-inch wheels.

Inside, the good looks continue and the simple sleek cabin area provides an air of class. We love the understated silver, white and black colour scheme that makes it feel relaxing. That said, the overall styling and the small steering wheel make it feel racy and fun.

Gorden Wagener, Chief Design Officer Mercedes-Benz AG, said: “The new Smart #1 stands for the re-start of the smart brand and showcases our new design DNA of Sensual Product.

“It is grown up, cool and embodies beauty with smart solutions. Therefore, it is new, fresh, and enchanting. Our new Smart #1 has the potential to make smart a leading design brand.”

The launch specification model of the #1 comes with a 66kWh battery that offers 200kW peak performance delivering 268 brake horsepower and 343nM of torque. This combined with being relatively lightweight at just 1,820kg, Smart says the #1 will have a top speed of 112mph (180kph).

In terms of range Smart say the #1 will deliver up to 273 miles (440km) of range making it practical for all types of driving whether it’s around town or longer trips. We expect Smart will offer cheaper smaller battery versions following the launch edition.

The #1 is capable of AC charging and with a 22kW charger can reach from 10-80  percent in around three hours. With a DC super-fast charger this is reduced to just 30 minutes.

Dirk Adelmann, CEO smart Europe GmbH, said: “We are very proud to finally present the production version of our Smart #1. It is not only a symbol for our new approach but it is also the nucleus of all things to come. With the re-branding, we will put an even greater focus on a seamless mobility experience.

In Europe, Smart works closely together with long-trusted strategic partners to set up the most suitable and right-sized network. With their new design, the Smart showrooms will reflect the new design DNA and the premium appearance of the smart brand, welcoming customers to experience the all-new Smart vehicles.
