- Automobile brand smart, jointly owned by Mercedes-Benz and Geely, has premiered the European launch of its smart #5, the largest model and EV from the brand yet.
- Owing to an 800-volt architecture, the smart #5 carries an impressive WLTP rated range of up to 366 miles, and charge speeds of up to 400kW – allowing it to take full advantage of the highest-power charging stations in Europe.
- Order books are set to open in April for Germany initially, with prices starting from €45,900, while UK sales are set to begin at an unconfirmed price from Q4 of 2025.
smart #5 to arrive in Europe this year
The smart #5 will be the third fully-electric car from the brand to debut in Europe, following the compact smart #1 and sports utility coupe, the smart #3. In top-end ‘Pulse’ and ‘Summit’ trims the #5 comes with a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive setup as standard, giving both rough terrain ability and the ability to accelerate from 0-62mph in 4.9 seconds. These trim levels also pack a heat pump as standard, helping bring the drivable range up to 366 miles.
The 400kW maximum charging speed on the #5 will allow for the battery to be charged from 10-80% in around 18 minutes – providing you can find a suitable 400kW public charger, such as those that have recently been popping up from Fastned.
Prices in mainland Europe are set to start from around €45,900, with prices rising to the top-end €56,900 ‘Summit Edition’ – which includes off-road inspired tweaks such as an electric towbar, side ladder, and roof platform – positioning it as a go-anywhere EV. While UK-specific pricing is yet to be confirmed, expect the entry level model to start from around the £40,000 mark. At this price, the smart #5 will be competing with compact electric SUVs such as the Tesla Model Y, Audi Q4 e-tron, and the also-new CHANGAN DEEPAL S07.
