Rivian spins off micromobility arm to new startup, called ‘Also’

  • It’s not just electric vans, trucks, and SUVs that Rivian has had in the works, with the OEM announcing that it has spun out its micromobility business branch into a new startup brand, called ‘Also’.
  • The spinout comes after Rivian operated a ‘stealth’ program surrounding lightweight EVs such as bikes and scooters, with the manufacturer exploring how it could apply its strengths in software, electronics, and electric motors into the micromobility sector.
  • Rivian will now own a significant minority stake in Also, allowing for the possibility of the new firm to utilise existing retail spaces owned by Rivian.

Not just electric vans, trucks, and SUVs

After Rivian launched its secret micromobility program several years ago, the manufacturer said it ‘became clear’ that a separate business, with its own branding and market positioning, would be a worthwhile effort. This new business, called Also, will offer small, lightweight electric vehicles designed to be sold globally. The team working at Also bring experience from both technology firms such as Apple and Google, but also from mobility firms such as Specialized and Uber.

The specifics of the products to be offered by Also are yet to be seen, although the business is set to reveal its first vehicles later this year. Speaking to TechCrunch, RJ Scaringe hinted at the first product being some form of electric bicycle, noting that it would have one seat, two wheels, batteries, and a computer/screen setup.

Models are likely to be built for both consumer and commercial purposes. On the commercial side, adoption of micromobility such as ecargo bikes has grown rapidly – particularly in cities such as London, where ecargo bike use rose 63% from 2023 to 2024. Also is moving into the sector at a pivotal time.

Rivian Founder and CEO, RJ Scaringe, commented:

“For the world to fully transition to electrified transportation, a range of vehicle types and form factors will be needed. I am extremely excited about the innovations developed by the Also team that will underpin a range of highly compelling micromobility products that will help define new categories.”
