  • The future Renault Twingo city car has been revealed as a sub-€20,000 EV, equivalent to around £17,500 – which would make it one of the cheapest electric cars on sale.
  • The new Twingo takes design inspiration from the original MK1 Twingo, released 30 years ago.
  • It comes as the second budget EV from the Renault Group, which should build on the success of the Dacia Spring EV.

Renault have announced that the Twingo city car, now in fully-electric four-door form. The new model will release in 2026. The company did not announce a specific price tag, but it is aiming for a price tag somewhere below €20,000. This will also allow for monthly payments on the car to be below €100. The Twingo EV will slot in below the upcoming Renault 5 EV. That’s expected to have a higher price tag around €25,000. It remains to be seen whether the Twingo EV will make its way to the UK, as the Dacia Spring was only available as a left-hand-drive option on the continent. Plus, developing a right-hand-drive solution adds cost to an already cheap car.

Renault CEO, Luca de Meo, said:

“This will be a game-changer, once again, like it was 30 years ago. We want to make EVs accessible and profitable in this part of the world.”

The upcoming electric city car should also record efficiency within its sector, with Renault quoting a figure of just 10kWh per 100km. That compares to 14kWh per 100km on the 42kWh variant of the Fiat 500e, for example. Meanwhile, the company predicts that over the lifecycle of the car, it will produce 75% less CO2 than the equivalent internal combustion engined car. It’ll also take up 20% less space on the road compared to the average European car, which is just what is needed on increasingly crowded urban roads. The new Twingo will be manufactured and produced by Ampere, a dedicated EV branch for Renault that recently became fully autonomous from the company.
