- After hinting at the electric Renault 4’s design last week with some close up shots, the Renault 4 E-Tech has now been revealed in full, as the Paris Motor Show commences.
- Set to be built on the same AmpR Small EV platform as the existing Renault 5 E-Tech, the 4 differentiates itself with its larger body and increased practicality.
- Much of the Renault 4 E-Tech’s exterior design pays homage to the original 1960s Renault 4 model, carrying on the manufacturer’s trend of bringing retro designs back for the EV era.
New Renault 4 revealed in full
From the outside, the 4 E-Tech’s design references to the past are apparent – from the flat, front grille with rounded headlights, to the three-piece rear taillights, all combined into a boxy, practical shape. Boot space stands at 420 litres, compared to the 5’s 326 – while the addition of rear doors are also a key differentiator.
Move to the inside, and the 4 looks thoroughly modern, however: with a dashboard that looks nearly identical to the new 5. Renault noted that the 4 and 5 will share 68% of their components, which should help make mass production of both EVs even easier. Both EVs will be made in close proximity, with the new 4 being produced at Renault Group’s Maubege plant – which already produces EVs in the form of the Renault Kangoo E-Tech.
Just like the Renault 5, the 4 will be offered in two battery sizes: 40 and 52 kWh, with drivable ranges of 186 miles and 250 miles respectively. No matter which model you go for, a 150hp electric motor will deliver 0-62mph in under 8.5 seconds – so the 4 will be pretty quick on its feet, too. Both battery packs also come with a heat pump as standard, helping increase the range and efficiency of the 4.
There’s still no word on pricing, expected to be revealed in early 2025, but given its technical similarities with the Renault 5, expect it to also target a starting price at or below €30,000. Renault have already opened its ‘R Pass’ scheme, allowing potential buyers to pay £150 to be one of the first to have access to the Renault 4’s order books.
