Project JOLT deep-dives into electric HGV performance
A new initiative called Project JOLT is revolutionising the freight industry in the UK. Spearheaded by The Centre for Sustainable Road Freight (SRF), this joint effort involves heavyweights like John Lewis Partnership, Volvo Trucks UK, and software experts Flexible Power Systems. Their mission? To dissect the practicalities and potential of electric heavy goods vehicles (eHGVs).
This innovative project hinges on data-driven insights, essential for navigating the path to Net Zero emissions. By pooling data and experiences from various sectors, including retail, delivery, and manufacturing, the JOLT team aims to craft comprehensive transition plans. Key players from Cambridge University and Heriot-Watt University will crunch the numbers. They’ll analyse vehicle and charger performance, operational efficiency, and cost implications across diverse industry applications.
Professor David Cebon, Mechanical Engineering at Cambridge University and Director of SRF, commented:
“The urgency of the climate crisis is driving adoption of electric heavy goods vehicles at a rate that few in the industry would have expected five years ago.
Operators are purchasing and running these vehicles today in fleets of all sizes. But there’s still a long way to go to understand how whole fleets and industries can transition to electric heavy goods vehicles in a technically feasible way.”
The project marks a significant step forward in the race towards sustainable freight solutions. As companies of all sizes embrace electric vehicles, Project JOLT aims to provide the roadmap for a seamless transition. Through collaboration, data analysis, and practical insights, this initiative is shaping the future of freight logistics.
