Wehrlein seals Formula E title amid London chaos

The Season 10 finale set the stage for a showdown as Pascal Wehrlein (Porsche), Mitch Evans (Jaguar TCS Racing), and Nick Cassidy (Jaguar TCS Racing) entered Round 16 separated by a mere seven points. What followed was one of Formula E’s most electrifying moments, with the GEN3 era bowing out in spectacular fashion.

Cassidy clawed his way back into contention after a disastrous Portland race and a tough Saturday qualifying in London. From 15th on the grid, he surged to seventh in race one and secured Julius Baer Pole Position for race two. Leading the field at the start, he watched as teammate Evans seized second place from Maximilian Guenther (Maserati MSG Racing) into Turn 1.

After an early Safety Car period at the ultra-tight ExCeL Circuit, Wehrlein quickly moved past Guenther into third, setting up a thrilling top three of title contenders by Lap 6.

Jaguar seemed poised to assert their dominance and execute their strategy with all three titles in play. But cracks appeared when Cassidy struggled with his initial ATTACK MODE activations. Evans went “gloves off,” while Cassidy voiced his frustration at falling behind both his teammate and Wehrlein.

The lead duo chose to extend their stints and take their two mandatory 50kW ATTACK MODE boosts later in the race. Meanwhile, Porsche and Wehrlein aimed to replicate Saturday’s winning strategy, with Wehrlein managing up to three percent more usable energy than the Jaguars.

The tension erupted on Lap 29 when Oliver Rowland (Nissan), who had surged from ninth to fourth, overtook Cassidy for third. This drop allowed Guenther to close in, leading to contact between da Costa and Cassidy at the final turn as the pack bunched up. Cassidy’s race ended with a puncture, leaving just two contenders as the Safety Car made another appearance.

Evans and Wehrlein still needed to use their ATTACK MODEs after an invalid activation under caution. Rowland briefly took the lead but had to give it up when the move was ruled illegal. Evans then regained the lead but failed to activate ATTACK MODE correctly on his next attempt, allowing Rowland to retake the top spot.

Evans finally activated ATTACK MODE on Lap 34, but Wehrlein quickly overtook him after successfully using his own boost. This sealed the Drivers’ title for Wehrlein, leaving Evans as the runner-up once again.

Rowland cruised to a maiden home win, while Wehrlein’s second place clinched him the Drivers’ World Championship by seven points over Evans. Cassidy, who had led into London, finished third. Jaguar’s consolation was a first top-tier motorsport title since 1991 with the Teams’ World Championship.

As the GEN3 era draws to a close, Season 10’s dramatic finale underscores Formula E’s thrilling unpredictability and intense competition. Wehrlein’s masterful drive through the chaos not only earned him the championship but also marked a significant moment in Porsche’s racing history. With Jaguar’s Teams’ Championship win offering a silver lining, the stage is set for an exciting new chapter in Formula E.
