Polestar breaks the cycle between growth and carbon emissions

  • Polestar has achieved a 25% cut in carbon emissions per new car sold, since the manufacturer started measuring in 2020, according to figures from its latest annual sustainability report.
  • With this achievement, Polestar has proved that growth can be decoupled from carbon emissions, particularly within the automotive and EV industry.
  • As its carbon emissions per car produced drop, Polestar is working towards a goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2040.

Polestar pushes down its carbon footprint further

The Polestar 4 has become the manufacturer’s lowest carbon EV to date, with a carbon dioxide equivalent as low as 19.4 tonnes, depending on specificiation. Recent moves Polestar have carried out to help reduce its carbon footprint per car produced include the introduction of lower-carbon aluminimum, used in all models, greener battery manufacturing techniques, and the use of renewable energy on Polestar production lines.

This reduction exists as part of the Polestar 0 project, which was launched back in 2021, and aims to eventually produce a fully-carbon neutral Polestar EV, as the company works towards its 2040 net zero goal. Polestar is not the only EV manufacturer making strides in reducing carbon emissions associated with electric vehicle production. Volvo recently carried out a life cycle assessment on its electric EX30 SUV, finding it to have the lowest carbon footprint of not just any Volvo produced, but any electric Volvo. With the recent founding of organisations such as Green NCAP, which rate cars from an environmental and sustainability standpoint, other EV manufacturers will want to follow in Polestar’s footsteps.

Michael Lohscheller, Polestar CEO, commented:

“Polestar has shown that it is possible to decouple growth from climate impact. In simple terms, we aim to continue to cut emissions as we accelerate sales. Even though much in the world seems to be going in the wrong direction, we are doubling down on our commitments. When the world zigs, Polestar zags.”
