Production of the Polestar 3 will split across continents as plants are prepared in the US and China
Production of the Polestar 3 has kicked off in Chengdu, China, marking a pivotal step towards the company’s expansion plans. The production is part of Polestar’s shift to a three-car lineup this year.
Polestar’s CEO, Thomas Ingenlath, highlighted the significance of this production:
“This stunning car takes a significant step forward with start of production marking an important milestone on our journey from a one- to three-car company this year. We have also achieved launch readiness at the factory in Ridgeville, South Carolina, and are well on track with our plans to start manufacturing Polestar 3 in the USA.”
The spotlight now shifts to the forthcoming production launch in South Carolina, USA, scheduled for the middle of 2024.
Ingenlath affirms that the Ridgeville factory is well-prepared for the production of the Polestar 3. The US production is a landmark for the Swedish innovator, getting it’s foot in the door of a major new market.
In 2024, the Polestar 3 will enter the competitive landscape of high-end electric SUVs. That means the Volvo EX90 will be a natural competitor. However, the Polestar has plenty of tricks up its sleeve. It boasts a dual-motor electric powertrain, offering standard 483bhp and an optional Performance Pack pushing it to 510bhp. Furthermore, it employs a 107kWh battery for a range of 379 miles. Charging at 250kW, it achieves 10 to 80 per cent in 30 minutes. Advanced chassis tech includes torque vectoring, adaptive dampers, and dual-chamber air suspension. Inspired by the Precept concept, its aerodynamic design enhances performance and range.
Zooming in on the US production, the Ridgeville factory’s launch-readiness positions the Polestar 3 as the first model to roll off the production line in the United States. This underscores Polestar’s commitment to the American market and aligns with the broader trend of automakers expanding their manufacturing presence in the country.
As the Polestar 3 embarks on its dual-continental journey, the eyes of the automotive industry turn to the USA. The commencement of production in South Carolina signifies not only a manufacturing milestone for Polestar but also a noteworthy chapter in the evolution of EVs on American soil.
