Places for London selects Fastned as preferred partner for future EV charging hubs

  • Transport for London’s property arm, Places for London, which is building retail, residential, and office spaces across the capital city, has announced a preferred partnership with European CPO, Fastned.
  • Subject to approval, this partnership will initially create five ultra-rapid charging hubs in London by 2026, with at least 25 further such sites planned in the years following.
  • The planned joint venture will contribute to London’s goal to achieve net zero carbon by 2030.

More ultra-rapid EV chargers for London

The sites will help solve the dilemma, particularly for those in flats, by building off-street charging hubs, whilst many of these sites will also have retail concessions and toilets on site, too. TfL say that all sites will ‘meet or exceed’ the recent standards required in the UK’s Public Charge Point Regulations act. This means sites will cover contactless payment options, while each site will include at least one bay for those with accessibility requirements.

TfL’s involvement with the charging industry is not only in the hope to boost EV uptake in the city, but also with the aim of reinvesting revenue generated by these charging stations back into the various transport networks it operates, in order to make all forms of transport more sustainable in London – not just cars.

In the five charging hubs initially planned, a total of 50 charging bays will be delivered, highlighting the significant size planned for each individual station. For the plan to be put into action, Places for London just needs to wait for approval from TfL’s Land and Property Committee, which is expected to make a decision later this year. If approved, sites under the agreement will begin construction from 2025, with the first opening the year after.

Mark Farrow, Director of Strategy and Planning at Places for London, commented:

“We are excited to have now selected Fastned as our preferred partner for our new joint venture to bring forward a number of new electric vehicle charging hubs. These hubs will help encourage high-mileage businesses such as taxi, private hire and commercial drivers, across London, to confidently make the transition to electric vehicles. These new charging hubs, the first of which will open in 2026, will make it even easier for those who need to rapidly charge their electric vehicles, with several bays at each location, helping London to further work towards the Mayor of London’s commitment to achieving Net Zero carbon by 2030.”
