  • Octopus Energy has partnered with ride hailing platform Uber to support more UK Uber drivers in making the switch to electric vehicles.
  • The first 1,000 Uber drivers to apply and make the switch to Octopus Energy’s EV-specific Intelligent Octopus Go tariff will be able to take free delivery of an Ohme ePod home EV charger, typically worth £900 – marking a collective saving of nearly £1 million for the first 1,000 drivers to take up the offer.
  • This partnership comes as Uber plans to increase the proportion of its trips carried out in fully-electric vehicles, as it hopes to become a zero-emission mobility platform by 2030 in the UK.

Uber partners with Octopus Energy to ease the EV transition for its drivers

Based on Octopus Energy’s calculated based on an annual mileage of 7,600 miles, the Intelligent Octopus Go tariff can save drivers up to £400 a year compared to a standard variable energy tariff – with that saving rising to £700 compared to a comparative ICE car. In the case of Uber drivers, their annual mileage is likely to be much higher than this figure, highlighting the significant savings Uber drivers could see by making the switch.

While Uber hopes to become a zero-emission mobility platform right across the UK by 2030, it has even more ambitious goals for London, aiming to make every car available on the Uber app in the capital fully-electric by the end of the year. So far, around 40% of Uber miles travelled in the capital take place in zero-emission vehicles. This new partnership will assist Uber in reaching both this 2025 target, and its wider 2030 goal.

Rebecca Dibb-Simkin, Chief Product and Marketing Officer at Octopus Energy, commented:

“Uber drivers spend more time in their cars than anyone else, so no one knows better what’s good to drive and cheaper to run.

With over a third of Uber drivers already feeling the benefits of EVs, we’re making it even easier for more drivers to go electric. By offering a smart charging tech bundle that does the hard work for them, Uber drivers can get real savings, and offer customers a smoother ride and next level service.”

Andrew Brem, General Manager of Uber UK, added:

“Uber drivers are leading the way in switching to EVs, embracing cleaner vehicles much faster than the general public. But one of the biggest barriers they continue to face is access to affordable and reliable charging.

This partnership with Octopus helps tackle that, making it easier for more drivers to go electric across the UK.”
