Be.EV charging hubs pave the way for eco-conscious travellers and a greener future in Northumberland

Three ultra-rapid EV charging hubs are being installed in Northumberland as part of efforts to promote sustainable travel. The hubs, developed by Be.EV in partnership with Advance Northumberland, support eco-tourism. That means the historical area can welcome its most eco-conscious road-trippers yet. With 10 million annual visitors, areas like Northumberland will need everyone to be able to charge to remain a tourist hot-spot.

Lee Farrier, Head of Commercial and Workspace at Advance Northumberland, added:

“This partnership is about much more than EV chargers. It’s about preparing Northumberland for the future while delivering tangible benefits for our communities. From supporting eco-tourism to helping residents embrace low-carbon transport options, these hubs are a vital part of our region’s green strategy.”

The charging hubs will be at Tyne Valley Retail Park in Hexham, Ramparts Business Park in Berwick, and Manor Walks Shopping Centre in Cramlington. These sites will provide 18 ultra-rapid charging bays, each capable of adding up to 125 miles of range in 20 minutes.

Their locations are close to major transport routes and popular attractions. The Hexham hub is near Vindolanda and Hadrian’s Wall. The Berwick site connects to the Northumberland coast and Bamburgh Castle. The Cramlington hub serves visitors heading to Tynemouth and surrounding areas.

Asif Ghafoor, CEO of Be.EV. commented:

“These new hubs mark a milestone in Northumberland’s journey toward a sustainable future. Our mission is to make EV charging simple, accessible, and integral to the travel experience.

By creating hubs in community-focused locations, we’re not only promoting sustainable travel but also supporting local businesses and enhancing the quality of life for residents. Drivers can conveniently recharge their vehicles while shopping, dining, or exploring nearby attractions, encouraging longer visits. Northumberland’s iconic locations, from Hadrian’s Wall to Kielder Forest, are now more accessible than ever to eco-conscious travellers.”

The first hub will open in November 2024, with the remaining two set to follow in early 2025. The balance of tourism growth with sustainable planning will be integral to the modern life of one of England’s most historic areas.
