Nissan has marked this year’s World EV Day (9th September) by announcing a new upcoming fully-electric model, the PIXO. With a full reveal set to take place later this month, the PIXO will become the smallest and most affordable electric car in Nissan’s European lineup, existing in the A-segment alongside EVs such as the closely related Renault Twingo, Hyundai INSTER, Honda Super-N, and more.
Nissan to reveal sub-£20,000 EV later this month
Nissan might have been one of the pioneering manufacturers of the EV revolution with models such as its Leaf (now in its third generation), but the company has yet to join the most affordable end of the EV market -except in Japan, where it sells the Sakura electric kei car. That’s about to change, with the company announcing the PIXO, slotting in below the Micra EV within its model lineup.
Under the ongoing Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance, the Micra EV already shared many of its components with its French cousin, the Renault 5, and the PIXO looks set to follow a similar pattern. Based on the same AmpR Small platform as the upcoming Renault Twingo, it’s likely to share a significant proportion of the Twingo’s parts, albeit with a Nissan twist on the design. That’s borne out by the photo of the PIXO under wraps (at the top of the article), which suggests a very similar body shape to the Twingo.
There’s no official further details on the PIXO until we hear more at its official reveal later this month on 23rd September. Still, we’d expect it to be priced in line with the Twingo, which would result in a starting price below the £20,000 / €20,000 across Europe. That low price would carry on the theme of the original petrol-powered Nissan Pixo, which was one of the cheapest cars on sale when it went on sale back in 2009. Powertrain and battery-wise, it’s likely to use the same setup as the Renault: An 80 horsepower electric motor, along with a 27.5 kWh LFP battery, delivering a range of around 163 miles (263 kilometres).
