NIO continues European EV expansion with new market launches

  • Chinese EV manufacturer NIO is set to continue expanding its European sales reach, announcing its intention to move into a further seven sales territories.
  • This will also include NIO’s new lower-cost subsidiary, Firefly.
  • The automaker will use a multi-channel strategy to sell its EVs, including direct-to-consumer sales as well as partnerships with local distributor groups.

NIO’s EV range to arrive in new European markets

The seven new territories that NIO plans to expand to over 2025 and 2026 are Austria, Belgium, Czechia, Hungary, Luxembourg, Poland, and Romania. These will join European countries already able to purchase NIO EVs, such as Norway, Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden, and Denmark. The UK wasn’t included on NIO’s latest list, but we’re still expecting to see right-hand-drive NIO EVs sold in the UK in the longer term.

The EVs on offer will include two electric SUVs, the NIO EL6 and EL8, along with the NIO ET5 saloon and ET5 Touring estate. NIO’s new high-end compact EV brand, Firefly, set to take on EVs from OEMs such as Renault and MINI, will also be available in these new territories.

It remains to be seen whether NIO’s battery swapping service, which has already been rolled out across Norway, will also make its way to other European territories in the future.
