New Dacia Spring Electric will become the cheapest electric car available in Europe

Dacia’s new Spring Electric will be the Romanian car manufacturers’ first electric car produced by French group Renault. The new electric car will be available to order in the spring of next year with deliveries expected in the autumn. It will be produced in Renault’s plant in Shiyan, China and is based on its City K-ZE model, which has been produced at the plant since 2019.

The new Spring, which is being described as a sub-compact electric sports utility vehicle, will be powered by a 26.8 kWh battery that drives the front-wheel-drive 44 horsepower motor. This will give the Dacia a range of around 140 miles (225km). No 0-62mph (0-100kph) figures have been released yet but the top speed will be 78mph (126kph).

The Spring will feature 30 kW fast charging that can charge it up to 80 percent in under an hour, while a 3.7kW charger takes around eight and a half hours. It will easily seat four adults and features a 300-litre boot. This increases to 600 litres with the rear seats folded.

The exact price hasn’t been released but Dacia claims it will offer the lowest total cost of ownership, when purchase price and cost of running are combined, of any electric vehicle available in Europe. Both car-sharing and cargo versions will also be available. At present, there are no plans for the Dacia Spring Electric to be sold in the UK but this could change in time.

Denis Le Vot, member of Groupe Renault Executive Committee, said: “Today, this is Dacia’s third revolution and its name is Dacia Spring. The Dacia Spring will make inroads into three distinct markets: retail market, car-sharing with numerous car-sharer operators throughout Europe and on the last-mile delivery with its cargo version. Cool and trendy, the Dacia Spring will change the game as an affordable electric mobility solution for all.”
