New AESC UK EV battery gigafactory is one step closer

AESC publishes job listings for its new battery gigafactory in Sunderland, which will support the locally-produced Nissan Leaf.
  • Global EV and energy storage battery manufacturer, AESC, has published new job listings for its upcoming EV battery gigafactory in Sunderland, England, as the plant gears up to launch soon.
  • The new plant is the second battery factory from AESC to be built in Sunderland, and will have a total annual production capacity of 15.8 GWh – enough to provide enough batteries for 100,000 EVs each year.
  • This facility will also provide batteries for the third-generation Nissan Leaf, which is being built just a stones throw away from the AESC plant.

AESC prepares to launch its second EV battery gigafactory for sunderland

The new plant, which was built on land previously owned by Nissan, is strategically located right next to Nissan’s Sunderland car plant. Nissan’s plant is undergoing a green transformation, and is set to build a number of fully-electric Nissans, including the new Leaf, as well as future all-electric versions of the popular Juke and Qashqai models. The new AESC plant will produce EV batteries specifically for the Leaf, which is set to begin delivery to UK customers from early 2026.

This high level of UK-sourced production is one of the reasons the new Nissan Leaf will benefit from the higher tier £3,750 Electric Car Grant for UK buyers, in which a specific level of UK production as well as sustainable practices is necessary for an EV to qualify for the highest grant level.

It’s another win for the UK’s growing EV industry. Tata is also set to open a battery gigafactory in the south of the country, with a significant annual production capacity of 40 GWh.

AESC UK Plant Director, Jim Marley, commented:

“This is a unique opportunity to join AESC as we prepare to launch our new UK electric vehicle battery plant and drive forward the electrification of the British car industry.

As long as people have the right attitude, we can provide all the on-the-job training they require to build a rewarding career in the green economy, so I’d encourage anyone interested to visit www.gigajobs.aesc.co.uk to find out more.”

Kevin Johnston, Cabinet Member for Housing, Regeneration and Business at Sunderland City Council, added:

“This is a fantastic opportunity to join AESC in battery manufacturing at scale here in Sunderland at the new gigafactory. We have a long track record of world class Electric Vehicle and Battery production here in the city, and I’d encourage residents from across our communities and the wider region to look at the job opportunities which AESC are now recruiting into.

Creating and sustaining valuable employment opportunities in our green economy is key, and we have worked very closely with the team at AESC since the gigafactory plans were first being developed to support and enable their investment. I know that young people from many of our schools have visited the gigafactory during its construction and am delighted to see recruitment now beginning for these new jobs.”
