- New Automotive’s August report on UK EV sales has uncovered a number of encouraging facts for the industry, with electric car sales shooting above expectations for the month of August, including for BMW.
- The report also caused BMW to stand out amongst other manufacturers, by bagging one of the highest BEV market shares over the last twelve months – 29.7%, to be exact, not accounting for manufacturers with 100% or near-100% BEV sales, such as Tesla and BYD.
- BMW isn’t the only manufacturer to have cause for celebration, however, with major brands such as MG, Mercedes-Benz, and Volvo also surpassing the 22% UK BEV target so far this year.
BMW on track to meet the UK’s ZEV targets
With OEMs in the UK required to reach 22% BEV market share across their total passenger car sales by the end of the year, BMW will be thankful to dodge any related fines, which are currently set at £15,000 per car, thanks to its significant 29.7% of passenger car sales being fully electric in the last twelve months. BMW’s success is no doubt thanks to its wide range of specific EV models on offer, which is higher than many other manufacturers. This also helped it to overtake Tesla in the European EV market, last month.
BMW won’t be the only legacy carmaker breathing a sigh of relief, however, with Mercedes-Benz, MG, and Volvo also passing the 29.7% BEV requirement as of the end of August – with figures of 25.8%, 27.5%, and 28.3%, respectively. Of course, this is so long as these manufacturers stay above 22% when accounting for the remainder of 2024 – but means other manufacturers are still in with a chance, too.
Across total sales for August 2024 alone, BEVs accounted for 23.09% of total passenger car sales. As a stepping stone to EV, however, hybrid vehicles accounted for another significant 28.47% of sales, which indicates that the industry is certainly heading in the correct direction, ahead of the 2030 mandate. For reference, just 6.11% of passenger cars sold last month in the country were pure diesel.
