- As part of German Munich Airport’s decarbonisation efforts, which include having 100% zero-emission ground vehicles by the end of the decade, the airport has placed in an order for 49 fully-electric MAN buses.
- The first 10 have been delivered to the airport this week, with another 27 set to be put into operation before the end of the year.
- The agreement also gives the airport the option to order a further 25 electric buses in the future, if required.
A big order for the MAN eBus range
Currently, Munich Airport’s bus fleet consists of 32 ICE-powered buses, but with 49 electric buses on the way, these could be phased out well ahead of the site’s 2030 zero-emission ground vehicle target. The electric buses being delivered will come in two different sizes, consisting of MAN’s Lion’s City 12 E and Lion’s City 18 E models, with their low floors making them ideal for airport use, alongside enough capacity to cover all size of plane departures and arrivals.
A cooperation between MAN and electric charging provider SBRS means that 40 charging stations will also be installed on site, in the future. Considering the relatively short distances of an airport bus, however, and a range of up to 350 km, it’s not something these electric buses will be doing too often.
Robert Katzer, Head of Sales & Product Bus at MAN Truck & Bus, commented:
“We are delighted that another airport, Munich Airport, is relying on our MAN Lion’s City E. It shows impressively that the eBuses are proving themselves in practical use in city traffic as well as in other areas of application.”
Helmut Ehrnstraßer, Managing Director of AeroGround Flughafen München, added:
“The fact that we get our e-buses and the right charging solution from a single source was a decisive factor for us. The new electric buses with modern equipment are a flagship for Munich Airport, as they are the first and last point of contact for passengers.”
