Milence Sparks UK Entry with Groundbreaking Charging Hub in Immingham
Milence, the joint venture by Daimler Truck, TRATON GROUP, and Volvo Group, is kicking off its first UK charging hub. Construction is already underway, and the hub is set to go live with phase one in November 2024.
The hub is located in Immingham, strategically placed on England’s east coast, offering strong connections with road and rail links, including direct access to major motorways like the M180, M18, and M1, ensuring seamless cargo distribution throughout the UK.
The port’s prime location offers under-24-hour access to a European market of 170 million people. With over 30 Ro-Ro (roll-on/roll-off) and Lo-Lo (lift-on/lift-off) sailings weekly, it efficiently serves Northern Europe, Scandinavia, and the Baltic regions. These extensive connections reinforce Immingham’s role as a pivotal logistical hub, boosting trade and transportation between the UK and Europe.
The hub will be situated at Able Humber Port (AHP), a 311ha deep-water offshore wind and renewable energy port with over 1,000 meters of heavy-duty quays, developed on 43.1ha of riverbed.
Peter Stephenson, Founder and Executive Chairman of AHP, stated:
“We are delighted to be welcoming Milence to Able Humber Port to develop one of the first electric charging HGV hubs in the UK. This is an exciting step forward in supporting the decarbonising of the Humber Ports and assisting Able Humber Port and the region transition towards net zero.”
The new Milence charging hub, the UK’s first of its kind, marks a major leap towards greener road transport. It will be developed in phases:
- Initially, it will feature four high-performance CCS chargers serving eight bays, with amenities like restrooms and vending machines for drinks and snacks.
- The final phase will expand with more CCS and MCS chargers, additional facilities, more vending machines, and a comfortable lounge area.
Anja van Niersen, CEO of Milence, commented:
“Expanding into the UK with our first charging hub in Immingham represents a significant milestone for Milence. This strategic location not only enhances our ability to support the growing demand for sustainable transport solutions but also aligns with our commitment to driving the future of green logistics across Europe.”
As Milence prepares to make its mark with this groundbreaking hub, the initiative reflects a bold commitment to transforming the landscape of sustainable road transport. The ongoing development in Immingham will not only bolster the UK’s infrastructure for electric freight transport, but also set a benchmark for sustainable logistics throughout Europe. The journey has just begun, and Milence is at the forefront of driving innovation and sustainability in the logistics sector.
