MG’s electric hypercar concept: 62 mph in just 1.9 seconds
MG has revealed the EXE181 electric hypercar concept, making its debut at the Beijing motor show this week.
The design takes cues from the EX181 land speed record car, famously driven by Stirling Moss and Phil Hill in the late 1950s, which was engineered for peak aerodynamic performance.
The EXE181 follows suit with a minimalist approach, featuring a smooth shell that wraps around a single-seat monocoque. The driver is cocooned in a central bubble, evoking the UFO-like EX181. The cockpit’s teardrop design extends into a sloping tail fin, which can raise to serve as an airbrake when decelerating from high speeds.
MG boasts a drag coefficient of just 0.181 for the EXE181, underscoring its aerodynamic prowess. To put this in perspective, the Volkswagen XL1 had a drag coefficient of 0.199, and the McLaren Speedtail rated at 0.278.
Inside, the EXE181 sports a yoke-style steering wheel with an integrated touchscreen, keeping the interior clean and minimalist.
Sources hint that the EXE181 has four electric motors, one for each wheel, though MG hasn’t provided specifics about the powertrain yet. However, with a claimed 0-62mph time of just 1.9 seconds, it likely packs over 1,000 bhp. This positions the MG EXE181 among the fastest-accelerating cars in the world.
MG hasn’t released the EXE181’s top speed, but on Weibo, the company alluded to the original EX181’s 254.91 mph record. This suggests the new hypercar will comfortably outpace its legendary predecessor.
With a nod to its record-breaking heritage, MG’s new EXE181 looks poised to blaze past its iconic predecessor’s 254.91 mph benchmark. As the future unfolds, this hypercar could redefine speed and innovation in the EV arena. The EXE181 debuts at this week’s Beijing motor show and is poised to be a standout at July’s Goodwood Festival of Speed, where MG’s centenary takes centre stage.
